SNY will name 50 greatest Mets, televise 92nd street Y event

In conjunction with the Mets 50th Anniversary Celebration, SNY will premiere the definitive list of the ’50 greatest Mets players’ of all-time in May. This 60-minute program presented by Citi — entitled 50 Greatest Mets — counts down the greatest players in club history, based on tabulated votes submitted by SNY’s blue ribbon panel. Panel members include Mets play-by-play announcers Gary Cohen and Howie Rose, Hall-of-Famer and long-time Mets broadcaster Ralph Kiner, columnist John Harper of the New York Daily News, and Steve Hirdt, the Executive Vice President of the Elias Sports Bureau. Panel members judged players based solely upon their tenure with the Mets. The 50 Greatest Mets program is a collaboration with MLB Productions, featuring rare footage from MLB’s vast library, and offering contemporary testimonials from current and former players, as well as numerous dignitaries of the game.

In addition, SNY will honor the Mets 50th anniversary with a tribute to the Mets greatest players with a special gala event at the 92nd Street Y on Sunday, June 17th. “The Mets All-Time Team” — presented by Citi – will feature its own blue ribbon panel discussing the very best Mets players in team history at each position: 1st base, 2nd base, shortstop, 3rd base, left field, center field, right field, lefty and righty starting pitchers, lefty and righty relievers, catcher, and manager. As the best player at each position is unveiled, he will join the panel on-stage [if unavailable to appear in-person, a video tribute will run in its place]. Expected attendees include: Tom Seaver, Mike Piazza, Keith Hernandez, Darryl Strawberry, Jerry Koosman and many others. The All-Time team selection panel includes Mets play-by-play announcers Gary Cohen and Howie Rose, columnists Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News, Mike Vaccaro of the New York Post, John Harper of the New York Daily News and Marty Noble of MLB.com and a senior member of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

While this historic event sold out shortly after tickets went on sale in December, SNY will televise this event on Thursday, June 21st at 8:00pm for fans who could not see it live in-person.
