Mets Likely to Offer Wright a Long-Term Deal – WSJ.com

The team is quietly preparing to offer third baseman David Wright a long-term contract extension at some point later this year—perhaps as soon as this summer—according to a baseball official briefed on the Mets’ thinking.

The Mets hold a $16 million option to retain Wright for 2013, so there is no urgency for them to begin discussing an extension with his representatives.

How many times did I type “David Wright is never ever going anywhere” this winter.

Oh and look, what do you know, the Mets have a club option for 2013.

The negativity this off=season was unreal.  Now the guy is hitting .400 and the team looks OK so suddenly everyone can see straight again.

And…

“I certainly do not foresee, under any circumstances, David being a topic of discussion at the trade deadline,” Alderson said.

  1. 1. Wright would be crazy not to test free agency and seek that $100M deal – if the Mets offer it, fine – great in fact. But I’m not sure I see Alderson offering that.

    2. Alderson used almost verbatim language on Reyes about deadline trade – albeit later in the process.

    3. Wright won’t offer any hometown discount greater than 5% and certainly zero years. The Mets will have to pay market value or close, and that value is going up rapidly – which, conversely, is great to watch.
