Don’t chase losses

This mentality worries me. Willie Randolph used to chase losses like this.

11-0 losses count the same and saves your bullpen for 3-2 victories. Via MetsBlog

Thoughts on leaving Gee in the game:

“Not when you’re trying to win a game and it’s only the third inning. We had a long game left. I know it’s Cliff Lee and I know you don’t score a lot of runs off him, but it beats being behind eleven nothing. I said if we stop him right here, maybe we can get back in this game. We got three more. We just couldn’t add on.”

  1. Not sure I get your point here? Are you saying that Collins should have left Gee in there? He was getting pounded. I was only listening and it sounded like he just had nothing.

So what would have been the point of leaving Gee in there? Collins wouldn’t say it, but you have to worry about a guy’s psyche after a while and he could have given up 20 runs in 5 innings. I think it was better to go to the pen. What the Mets don’t have is a Darren Oliver type – someone who can vaccuum up innings in a game like that.

  2. Also, it’s true that the Mets lost 8-3, but if they could have forced Lee to throw enough pitches to get him out of the game they could have come back against the Phillies’ pen. I didn’t think it was over at 7-0 (although it was).

  3. No, I get what Terry’s saying here. Perhaps Gee would’ve settled down and we would’ve eventually gotten to Lee. But a 7-run deficit is difficult — and overwhelming — to overcome. Gee has got to learn to get out of jams unscathed and mow through the lineup. There are going to be days that he doesn’t have it, and from what Eagle, above, is saying, where you could hear that pitches weren’t the same, taking him out when Terry did was the right thing to do. Why fuckup his head in the process?

  4. I’m not going to debate whether or not he should or shouldn’t have pulled him but at minimum somebody needed to go to the mound and talk to him. Slow things down a little and let gee catch his breath. That might have been a nice opportunity for our new captain to earn that C. Don’t get me wrong, I love wright- I’m just sayin… Maybe he did and i missed it?

    1. You’re 100% right — why didn’t Wright talk Gee “down”? I gotta admit I didn’t see the entire game — was running in and out of the kitchen — so maybe I missed it too. David usually goes to the mound; in fact, when one fielder comes to the mound, usually another will follow. Hmmmmm.

  5. Cliff Lee doesn’t wear an “S” on his chest. While he looked sharp his last two outings, he’s on the decline like Halladay. And why do they call Roy Halladay “Doc”? The Wild West bad ass was Doc HOLLIDAY (like Matt’s name), not Halladay. Or is the Doc a probable rip-off of Dr. K ?!?!
