My Mets Banner Day Thoughts

I don’t agree in total with Shannon’s Post about Banner Day. The weather was iffy and I think a 100 entries for that day a was pretty impressive. It was reported by most of the the weather people that there was supposed to be scattered showers all day. I even had the two people that were coming with me back out because of the weather. So I can understand why there wasn’t a bigger turnout. However, I do feel the quality of the banners came out much better then last year and I’ll take the quality over the quantity.

I do see his point about people asking him/us to fight for something like banner day(People want old timer’s day,etc..) and by not showing up that it kind of kills the momentum of getting the Mets to keep on doing things like this. I have known Shannon all my life and I know when he gets passionate about something and he feels people might have dropped the ball he will go on an offensive. Did he go a little overboard? Maybe. But, I rather have him being passionate then blaise’.

I had fun on banner day. If you guys don’t want to participate, I understand. You should get into it next year if you can, it is a experience. Otherwise I know the people who want to do it will do it, the people who don’t want to won’t. Also read Dan’s post about this. I agree with his post more then I agree with Shannon’s.

HOLD TIGHT AND PRETEND IT’S A PLAN

  1. You can be passionate about something without insulting those who don’t share your passion. That’s the mistake Shannon made and refuses to acknowledge. I never asked him to fight for Banner Day because I don’t really care about it. But he lumped me and everyone else in the same category with those who did ask him to fight for it. That was patently unfair. Did he go a little overboard? No, he went a lot overboard.

  2. Perfectly said, Tom G. Will Shannon ever speak, or will this become his Benghazi??

    1. First of all Greg, to even compare this in the same light as Benghazi is ridiculous. Second go look back in previous comments he responds. The other thing is if you don’t like what you read here on MP, there is no reason you have to keep reading.

  3. Media Good, you seem to be very thin-skinned about this. What are you implying, that only people who agree with the Mets Police point of view should read the blog? Shannon can insult all of us but we can’t respond in kind? You can’t trash all but 99 Mets fans and not expect a visceral reaction.

    1. You can say whatever you want that’s why there is a comments section, but I am going to respond how I want to. And it’s goon by the way not good. Might want to check spelling before hitting send. What I am suggesting if it really upsets you so much, you don’t need to read it.

  4. Ok, so now you are going to resort to petty comments about spell checking. Here’s the bottom line- you sound like a little baby who had his favorite toy taken away from him. Grow up. You and Shannon have caused this, not us. As for your suggestion to stop reading, I’m going to take you up on that. Up until now I have enjoyed follwing you guys and respected your work. That’s all gone. I’m sure you won’t miss me and you can be certain I won’t miss you. Good luck with next Banner Day, clowns. Hope my spelling was good enough for you, Goon.

    1. Talk about needing to grow up. Nice name calling btw. And I was breaking your chops about the spelling.Shannon must have really hit a nerve with you.

  5. Shannon’s response, which was to a reader’s posted comment, consisted of “I write what I feel.”

He was, um, a little more verbose in his initial post, was he not?

And why does every MP “official” or “friend” speak — except the guy who created this little discussion theme??

You’re right — this is not Benghazi. No disrespect intended to those who lost their life or were injured in the service of our country.

But come on — the wordsmith who created “Smurphy,” the guy who goes on for months over black vs. blue and orange, can’t spit out any better response than “I write what I feel” ?????

All we’re looking for is some sort of acknowledgement from Mr. Shark that he understands the “pissed off” reactions to what he created. He doesn’t have to agree with the viewpoints opposite his, but some sort of “yes, I do hear you” would really be welcome. Heck, Dan Twohig and Media Goon did just that! See, it’s really possible!!

Unless, of course, this whole controversy was his way of jimmying up page views to create more revenue for him…

    1. There’s revenue here?!?! Shannon you holding out? If we are making money with this site, I better be getting more then a hat or a jersey every few months.

    2. Greg – I just spent an hour working on about 10 posts. It takes time to post images. I’m pretty active in twitter. I just can’t write essays in the comments section.

As for the others speaking – nobody on here is muzzled. They too write what they feel. I don’t recall ever asking anyone not to post anything. Sometimes I meddle in the timing of posts – we do want things to be read.

  6. As a banner day veteran through the 70’s and 80’s – nothing beats having it sandwiched between 2 games of a double header. I remember in 85, Al Rocker disqualified my Banner because it was on a piece of 8X10 basement paneling and officially not a banner. I think it is still in my garage. Anyway to all the Met fans who were so excited in the beginning of the season thinking we may be better than what the forecasters said and now are bemoaning our recent downfall, I have one thing to say – what did you expect? this is what a met fan signs up for. My Banner for next year will be my motto of 40 plus years – THE METS – HOPE FOR THE BEST – BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST!

  7. Shannon, thank you for your comments. You don’t have to write an essay as a comment; heck, just a few sentences in the form of a regular post would be welcome to acknowledge those who felt insulted. If you’re working on 10 posts, one can’t be a few sentences saying, “yes, I get why you’re pissed. Didn’t mean for it to come across that way.”? Look, I know you’re busy; the site is very active and the posts you and others put up are welcomed. Just speaking for myself, your original post about Banner Day came across like a backhand to the face. I was there. I saw you outside the stadium by the outfield entrance, in your MetsPolice 13 jersey, walking up and down the sidewalk taking pictures, shooting video, talking to other fans. You were hanging with a boy I presumed to be your son, and you were with Media Goon, who was wearing his jersey. From what I could tell, you were really enjoying the atmosphere and fellow fans, even after you went through security and waited inside the stadium near the Modell’s area. You kept MP.com fresh all day, and yes, you were on Twitter all day. Then came your slam vs. fans who didn’t come with banners. I come to your site daily. I like what you do. But there’s a difference between advocating/connecting, as you usually do so very well, and letting your disappointment at a low turnout turn into unmitigated wrath on people who stop by your site out of passion — and never expect that daytime diversion they look forward to to end up in being criticized and judged. That’s it on my end. The ball is in your yard. Accept it or punt it. Thanks.
