With the news that R.A. has signed with the Braves, he seems like a good choice for today’s post.
R.A. is my favorite kind of players. For every Ike Davis or Matt Harvey that comes with tons
of hype, there is an R.A. Dickey. A journeyman knuckler who got called up during the Madoff Years, he was lots of fun to watch.
I am told that his teammates didn’t like him because he garnered a lot of attention on his off field activities, which were things like raising money and enjoying Star Wars. In a world where 40% of the rotation has Look At Me Disease, that makes me laugh.
And whoa…he won the Cy Young!
Unfortunately, the Blue Jays were fools and overpaid for a journeyman knuckler who had a career year, and R.A. had to go. It hurt, but he had to. The right thing to do, even if at the time fans didn’t like it (many fans can only see three feet in front of them).
I hope Dickey has a good season. Not against the Mets, and not enough to keep the Mets from the playoffs, but I hope he has a nice year.
