Metsworld: repeating the loop of playing an IF in the OF

metsworld

Who can tell me what the following people have in common:

Howard Johnson

Keith Miller

Todd Hundley

Daniel Murphy

Lucas Duda

Jose Reyes

and some say Juan Samuel.

That’s right…none of them have any business being in the outfield.

I read on the interwebs that Ford Sandy is going to assign Jose Reyes to the loop where we send an infielder to the outfield for no reason.  It apparently isn’t that easy, and we have lots of examples of people failing at it.

But let’s go up one level.  What’s the big story this winter?

That’s right, the Mets supposedly have too many outfielders.  How can the Mets possibly get playing time for Yo, Bruce, Granny, Lagares and Conforto?

I know, let’s send Good Ol’ Jose Reyes out there.  (Good Ol’ Jose Reyes is being paid $22M to not play for Colorado, but whatever, well discussed).  That will solve the OF logjam.

This makes almost no sense unless Ford is worried about the 22nd inning happening.

There are recurring themes in Metsworld, and this one has been going on for 30 years.  Stop sending infielders to the outfield.  If you need an outfielder (and I thought we had too many) then get an outfielder.

And as for that outfield logjam – Grandy is 35, Yo tends to need breaks.  I’m sure that Terry can figure out how to find playing time for Conforto and Lagares, and even Terry learned the art of the defensive substitution last year.  This isn’t that hard.  That’s what she said.
