MUST READ: Willets Point’s billion-dollar mall on parkland is debated in court – Curbed NY

You may hear some of us talk about “The Mall” – this is one of the best recaps I have seen and it will catch you up on things.

As I understand it, the 1961 law allows for building sports arenas (so to my non-legal brain I think it’s a relatively easy road to building a hockey arena) but not as clear as to build a mall.  Also I personally am not sure a rooftop garden is a great substitute for parkland, but I guess you could argue its more parklike than a parking lot.

Good read….read it!

An assistant solicitor general for the state held up the argument that mall and accompanying movie theater, known as Willets West, will serve the public with accessible open space and rooftop garden.
