Is Dwight Gooden the best Mets player of the 1980s? Maybe.

Dudes I had 59 wins, a ring and a Cy at age 21. Please.

These days discussions of Dwight Gooden tend to be framed by What Could Have Been.   Let’s not worry about that and focus on What Happened.

59 wins, a ring and a Cy Young by Age 21.   That’s why I eyeroll you millennials every time a Mets pitchers wins three games and gets a superhero nickname and you start making reservations at Cooperstown.

Surprisingly only 6th in innings, fewer than Darling (who came up earlier), 2nd in innings to Ronnie, first in wins, first in strikeouts, first in complete games (54….go nuts Generation 2K, let me know when you get to 5 combined.), 19 shutouts, and a 2.64 ERA.

Shea never rocked the way it did on a Friday night when Dr. K pitched.

Is Dwight Gooden the best Mets player of the 1980s?  Maybe…..or is it actually Ron Darling…come back tomorrow.
