25th Anniversary of the 1993 Mets

Oh 1993 Mets…how bad could it be with this group….

1B Eddie Murray – .285 25 and 100 at Shea! Future HOFer!

2B Jeff Kent – all he needs is some Bonds-like lineup protection and this guy is MVP Caliber

3B Howard Johnson – a 30/30 guy that can play SS or even CF if you need!

RF Bobby Bonilla – if he can hit 34 HRs playing at Shea, people will love him.

In the rotation – Gooden and Saberhagen are a great 1-2. Some veteran depth in Tanana. Sid still has stuff. This kid Hillman has potential.

And then there’s reality…

Tito Navarro, Darrin Jackson, Mike Draper! Swoosh uniforms!

I’m not even going to get into fireworks, bleach or golf clubs.  (Look it up kids)

And you must read this from the SI Vault….

“Come here, let me show you something,” Wilpon says. He rises from a chair in the Fifth Avenue office of his real estate company and walks across the room to a white rectangular box that is so large it is resting across four chairs. There is a great sense of purpose in his walk now. He is finished watching others run his baseball team. McIlvaine and Oilier will report directly to him. The Mets won’t embarrass him again the way they did in 1993.

Oh OK.  And here’s some more fun..

Wilpon wants former Mets such as Tom Seaver, Mookie Wilson, Lee Mazzilli and Rafael Santana to come work for the organization. He wants “the greatest community outreach program” in sports. He wants grand entranceways and redesigned fan services at what has been a tacky Shea Stadium. He wants updated, cheery uniforms for the ushers. He has ordered intensive customer-relations training for all of the organization’s business managers, including himself. He has talked with the Disney people, Universal Studio executives and other resort managers to learn how to attract and treat customers.

Hilarious.

THEN if you keep reading, Fred shows his model of the retractable dome (somewhat) privately funded stadium that will be open in five years.

It’s good to see Fred is taking this seriously.  1994 should be great even if Dwight Gooden is the only 86 or even 88 Met left by the end of the year…and what could go wrong there.

Must read SI Article.

59 Wins.   But you know, you millennials have it so hard with this 2018 Mets team.  Please.
