Why did the Mets go with a black S patch in 1992?

Let me tell you about @Osh41.  I have said for a decade now that he is the Chuck Berry of Mets Police.  90% of this site comes from the type of conversation we had in schoolyards, bars and emails since 1983.  If he weren’t lazy this whole thing should have been.  Much like the Beach Boys benefitted from some Chuck Berry riffs, I have greatly benefitted from stealing Osh41’s ideas and adding some harmonies.

So this week he emailed me this – and the question/observation was: hey why did the Mets do a BLACK patch way back in 1992?   Couldn’t this have worked just as well in team colors?

What?  A BLACK S?  I know about black armbands and wearing black to uniforms, but through the rear view mirror, this black S is a warning sign of horrible things to come (Thanks Charlie and thanks Jeff).  With all due respect to Mr. Shea, this black S looks terrible.

This should have been a warning not to put black on a uniform.  Imagine how terrible something like the below could look.

Oh the horrors.

On another note, let’s see how this post does today.  In my mind I would normally consider this “weekday” content, but the site has been hot lately and traffic is back up so let me floor it while it’s hot.  I will probably regret this midweek when I am stuck in a meeting and have nothing to post.  On the other hand, I’ve almost made it through the winter so soon will have 6 to 8 months of baseball games to comment on.
