I find myself really missing Young too.  For a guy that wasn’t here long, I really enjoyed him.  Hopefully he comes back.  Here’s an excerpt from Mark Simon’s longer piece on ESPN NY

Young’s 1.88 ERA would be the best overall mark for any Mets pitcher who made at least four starts with the team. In single-season annals, it’s topped only by Dwight Gooden’s 1.53 ERA in 1985, Mike Birkbeck’s 1.63 ERA in four starts in 1995 and Tom Seaver’s 1.76 ERA in 1971.

What will Thursday’s Uni Watch bring?

Hmmm…first Paul Lukas tells me:

I wanted to let you know that my ESPN column this week will be very Mets-centric, and it’s about a subject near and dear to your (and my) heart. Trust me, you’ll dig this one. It’ll run on Thursday.

Then LI Phil posts in the comments here that:

regarding the ESPN column…oh yeah

paul gave me an advanced preview and lets just say we may have a new PE #1 (public enemy #1)…and it’s not charlie samuels

stay tuned

Hmm I am very intrigued.

Ridiculous R.A. Dickey correction in the Times

I applaud them correcting any mistakes, but this one makes me giggle.

An item in the Extra Bases baseball notebook last Sunday misidentified, in some editions, the origin of the name Orcrist the Goblin Cleaver, which Mets pitcher R. A. Dickey gave one of his bats. Orcrist was not, as Dickey had said, the name of the sword used by Bilbo Baggins in the Misty Mountains in “The Hobbit”; Orcrist was the sword used by the dwarf Thorin Oakenshield in the book. (Bilbo Baggins’s sword was called Sting.)

Get off my lawn (Mets wearing black again)

Back in my day we had nice uniforms. We had real stats like average. If a guy went 1 for 3 you knew he was hitting .333 and that was good enough.

Damn kids and your advanced stats and black uniforms…get off my lawn!

I decided to give in and bring advanced stats to Mets Police.  So I went to the @FormerDirtDart Sports Bureau and they were able to hook me up with some numbers.

The Mets have an impressive 1.000 HATE (Hybrids As opposed to Tradition Everyday) win percentage at home.  However, road HATE is a paltry .375.  Their combined HATE is .444

WABU (Wins after Black Uniforms) are currently being crunched.  I will share those when I get them.

Speaking of uniforms, Paul from Uni Watch emailed me, “I wanted to let you know that my ESPN column this week will be very Mets-centric, and it’s about a subject near and dear to your (and my) heart. Trust me, you’ll dig this one. It’ll run on Thursday.”

Hmmm.   Sounds fun!
