Proposed Uniform Treaty of Flushing 2010

Friends,

In the interest of the greatest good I have decided to modify the proposed terms of the Treaty of Flushing.  Today I take it to my constituents for discussion.

There are some major concessions being made here, and I make them based upon the uphill battle that would need to be fought against certain former minor league baseball players who like different colors than I.

If you’re a newbie, the Treaty of Flushing will be when Dave Howard and I meet in an old abandoned 7-train subway car to settle our differences and unite in friendship.

Proposed terms:

1.  Drop-shadow is removed from all uniform designs except the black jerseys.

2.  “Hybrid caps” are eliminated and the Mets always wear blue caps.

3.  As established in 2010, the Mets primary home uniform shall be white, pinless, with blue piping, blue caps, blue socks.   This uniform shall be worn on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday with the exception of Opening Day and the first home game of the World Series.

4.  On Opening Day, Sundays and the first home home game of the World Series, the Mets home uniform will be pinstripes with blue everything, as was worn by Tom Seaver in 1969.

5.  On Friday at home the Mets will wear black jerseys with all-black caps and matching black attire.

6.  On Friday on the road the Mets will wear black NEW YORK jerseys with all-black caps and matching black attire.

7.  On the road the Mets will wear gray NEW YORK jerseys in the traditional “1973” style with blue caps and matching blue attire, except on Friday when they will wear black.

8.  Names will appear on all versions of the jerseys.

9.  Dave Howard will provide an updated quote indicating that there are indeed seats where the plexiglass at Citi Field blocks your view of home plate.

10.  The uniform design shall remain through the 2030 season.  Any major change in design would replace the Friday black jerseys.

I’ve made some major concessions and I cannot bend any further.

I think this should please the traditionalists, the Piazza/Valentine generation, those who wish to coordinate their attire with the team’s, and the marketers.

What do y’all think of the proposal?

  1. Not bad, though I would be more in favor of making the pinstripes the primary home uniform, and making the pinless whites the Sunday home jersey, or some other arrangement. Leaving the black is quite the concession, indeed. I noticed a whole lot of fans wearing cream pinstripe jerseys on opening day, so I’m hoping this trend continues and the marketing dept takes notice. Personally, I think money can be made by the team marketing a “return to the classics”, which need not necessarily be true mets retro, ie. new cream pinstripes primary home, the retro cream big NY jersey’s they wore against the Giants in ’09 alternate, and the classic road greys, all with blue hats. For turn back the clock, wear 80’s and 90’s jerseys, instead of homages that only mimic jerseys worn by the Old NY Giants. They could wear a linear succession throughout a series, and fans can break out corresponding period jersey for the game, which would increase sales. Get Strawberry to throw out a pitch on 80’s night, and Piazza to do the same for 90’s night. We’ll just pretend the uniform insanity didn’t continue thoughout the 2000’s.

  2. Shannon, what are you doing? Too many concessions.

Keeping any black is a huge concession. If you want to go that way do not go back on anything else

The primary uni should never be anything but the pinstripes

  3. I prefer primary to be the pinstripes. I have stated before i liked the blacks when they came out but have grown out of them like a lot of people and I always hated the pinless whites. Part of the origin of the Mets original uniform and colors was to take from each NY team. Blue – Dodgers, Orange – Giants, Pinstripes – Yankees.

I feel like when the blacks came out they were the “special” jersey which was worn maybe once or twice a week. They have since taken over although thus far we haven’t seen them yet this year (fingers crossed).

I would love this team to just go for a classic look 5 days out of 7 and concede something different the other 2 days like Shannon is proposing. If it means black jerseys those 2 days, fine, if it means an all blue jersey even better.

  4. shannon, i proposed a similar outline to Paul Lukas a few months back (just sans the black ‘New York’ road jersey).

IF the black must stay, i’d prefer it one the road. that way, the black jackets and hats don’t even get unpacked at home, therefore not tempting charlie to wear them anywhere but away from citi. but i could live with this. like i’ve been saying, mets uniforms purists don’t resent black as an alternate color as much as they resent it must be on EVERYTHING the team touches. if it’s an ‘alternate’ color (similar to the now baby blue addition into the royals color scheme) then make it an alternate color. the royals haven’t added baby blue dropshadowing to their homes. think of it that way.

  5. Shannon you gave too much in the way of concessions. NO BLACK at all! Personally I liked the off white pinstripes and wish they would wear them at home all the time, but without the black back drop. Next year, drop the snow whites and have a second home uni that is also off white but without piping. It should have blue-orange-blue (thinly) on the sleeves like the negro league uni’s with one blue stipe on the pants. No black back drops at all and no black uni’s EVER!

    1. Metsr1 welcome to the conversation. I absolutely admit I made lots of concessions. When I buy the team it will be pinstripes and blue and ’73 roads and there won’t even be names on the back.

However, the person that will be the owner for the rest of my life seems to enjoy other colors. So I shoot for 6 out of 7 days looking nice.

  6. What about BP jerseys and hats? That’s the perfect place to give some leeway.

Also, rather than giving Friday games as the day for black, give Mondays or Thursdays. Since all off days (other than the All Star Break and opening week) are scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays, that would minimize the number of eligible dates for the black uniforms…

  7. You know, I really get tired of the whole “Yankees-pinstripes” nonsense. The simple fact is that both New York National League teams wore pinstripes before the Yankees did.
Also, in a historical context, MLB teams having multiple uniform varients during a season, and changing their uniforms (and their logo) somewhat regularly, has been quite common.
That being said, I prefer the Mets in pinstripes, and road grays. But, I can live with alternates. I would just like there to be a set pattern of uniforms, and something like a schedule for their use. I don’t think anyone wants the team to start looking like the Oregon Ducks.
Bottom line is that the Wilpons own the team, and making “demands” on how they dress “their” team isn’t going to go anywhere. The simple fact is that a sizable portion of the Mets fan base likes the blacks, and even the whites. So, if you are climbing up on your milk crate out in front of Citi Field ranting “DITCH THE BLACK, THE FANS HATE IT”, you really aren’t speaking from fact. And, you seem like just another fanatical NY fan faction.
I think a reasonable goal right now would be to convince management that if they set a schedule for uniform wear, the fans base would be appreciative, and may actually show up in like dress. Thus presenting a unified team-fan base front. Isn’t this the main principle of the “Blue Cap Army”?
The team listened, and made Citi more of a home for the Mets and their fans. I’m guessing reasonable, calmly expressed “suggestions”, will carry weight.

  8. The plain whites are so inferior to the pins, I can’t support any treaty that would have anything but the pins as the primary home jersey. I will allow black to remain on the road jerseys and caps before I concede that point.

  9. Concessions are fine, but I’d fight for greater pinstripe representation: Home games 1 and 3/4 (should the Mets have home field advantage in division and NLCS/WS respectively) in all playoff series. All weekend home games.

  10. Agreed that the whites are inferior, but I do like that the schedule elevates them to something special. Whites are your everyday workshirts, blacks are what you wear to go out on a Friday night, and pinstripes are the french-cuff fancy dress complete with cuff-links, reserved for open bars on somebody else’s dime.

  11. I don’t care about black or not.. as long as they don’t use the off-white pinstripes. I think they look dirty. I always critized the Giants for looking dirty on the All-Star Game pic. Get rid of the cream color!

All in all they can wear Orange Shirts as far as I know. As long as they get a win.

    1. Just got a pretty cool email…another one of those that I may not like but it’s very cool and reasoned and makes sense…saving for Tuesday because it will get lost today/weekend. Uni stuff.

  12. Thanks for the kind words Shannon. Keep up the fight until all of the black is gone.

  13. Shannon, diplomacy being the art of the possible I’ll say this………….by and large you were right in laying out the proposed terms but in doing so you revealed what’s wrong with the Coupons and Howard.

Pinstripes should be our primary home jersey period. The snow whites sans Good Humor cap that they debuted with should be worn on Sundays and Sundays alone. That Mutts ownership continues to press the pinless whites strikes me as another attempt for Fred to recreate Dodgers 2.0 because the pinless whites remind me more of Johnny Podres than they remind me of John Matlack or John Franco

  14. I would trade the occassional black days for reversing the pinstripes & the Dodger uniforms.

  15. one more thing i’d like to throw out there: how about a few throwback games per year? like a throwback weekend series? something they’ve hesitated to do the past few years (i remember they did ’86 throwbacks in ’02 and ’06)

i’d love to see one weekend of, let’s say, a ’69 game for friday, a ’73 pullover jersey for saturday and the ’86 racing stripes for sunday all complete with stirrups.

  16. brian erni,
I think last years “New York NL History” creams with the big NY were used as the throwback category last year. Plus, the Mets didn’t wear the pullovers until ’78, which is also when they added player names

  17. Although I like some of the proposals laid forth by Shannon, I mostly agree with FormerDirtDart’s April 9, 2010 @ 10:16 a.m. comment.
However, I disagree with pinstripes (I know I’m in the minority, but really believe that only the Yankees, who we copied them from, should have them in NY), but do see how many would like to keep them. I do think that the snow-whites should keep the piping, because this uniform is actually a uniquely Mets uni that none of the other NYC teams ever had. Also, I actually like black and have never been really big on the blue cap (although I would like it better if it were the darker Dodger blue it originally was), but again understand why there is strong sentiment to keep it.
Could a compromise be had, possibly by having a blue crown with a black bill (like they did with the BP cap a few years ago where it was basically reverse colors of the game cap)? Or by possibly having blue caps at home and all-black caps on the road (i.e. no blue bill and not outlining the NY in orange but changing it to an orange NY and keeping a blue button on the top. This would go with the uniforms we copied from the roadies worn by the NY Giants).
I think that orange should ONLY be used as accent colors and NEVER given lots of prominance (e.g. no orange bill on a cap, crown of cap, jersey a la 2003 BP jersey, main lettering, etc.). I think that the skillful use of black actually allows you to do more with the blue. But no black jerseys on the field (but don’t object to black jackets). The only useful purpose of black jerseys is to give the appearance that the pudgy fan wearing it is slimmer than he is (which is why I wear mine so often 🙂 ).

  18. The stirrup thing is not a team choice it is more of a player choice. Some guys like long pants some guys like the solid blue/black socks. I have to be honest, I absolutely hated having to wear stirrups when playing baseball. It is a great look because it is classic but it is not the end all to me

  19. I understand making concessions to get the Mets to wear blue and orange more often. However, if we’re going to push for something it should be to wear their traditional unis all of the time. Black has no place in the Mets color scheme and pinstripes are what the team has worn since it’s inception.

  20. btw, when I said they should wear their traditional pinstripes, I meant the bright white pins. Not the cream or off-white variant they have now.

  21. Since you brought it up BPALM, I submit we add that no pant leg material shall exceed past the ankle joint. this way we can relent on the stirrups if needed, ad still do away with with the “footie-pajama” look

    1. it is actually a rule in the mlb that pants cant go too low. Guys like to wrap the bottoms on their cleats. Why i don’t know but there is oddly a rule.

As long as they perform i don’t care if the clothes are a little baggy but if i had a guy like CC on my team i would be embarrassed the way he wears his uniform. It is a joke

  22. Add home holiday day games (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) as pinstripe days in Item #3/#4, and I fully support this.

I’d actually start negotiations by asking for pins for EVERY day game, then if rebuffed, offer up the special occasions as a compromise. You have to leave yourself somewhere to go.

  23. Shannon, Terms 7 & 8 are contradictory. Names were not worn on any ’73 jerseys

    1. And names should only be worn on Road jerseys now. The home fans should take the time to learn who plays for them. I don’t expect the fans from a far away city to take as great an interest in my team, so the names should be on the Road jerseys.

  24. great point, formerdirtdart, about the pullovers for ’78. that was a mistake on my part.

just briefly on stirrups, i know it’s a player thing when it comes to regular games. but teams have required players to do it for throwback games for example: http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/multimedia/photo_gallery/0806/mlb.throwback.uniforms/images/braves.jpg

and yes, i know TECHNICALLY the cream, big NYs against the giants last year were supposed to be throwbacks, but we all know it wasn’t truly a mets throwback. how about something they actually wore this time?

  25. i was on my honeymoon when they wore the giants throwbacks last year. I have to be honest everytime i see someone with that jersey or see a pic of a met in it i like it more and more. I think it is is a pretty awesome look

  26. Thinking about Michael’s point, it would be a nice distinction. To remove names while my preference, only acts as fodder for those who dwell on entrance music as if this were the WWE–worrying about who is copying who and what other teams play with nameless jerseys (even though their fans go out of their way to wear ones with the name added, but I digress). Distinguishing yourself, doing it only on the home Jerseys while keeping names on the away, makes sense.

    1. Fun trivia factoid: When the Mets instituted the pullover jerseys in ’78, they only wore names on the road jerseys. Names on home jerseys were not adopted until ’79, year 2 of the mets pullover era.

  27. Too many concessions.

If you have to compromise, wear the white pins (or, the cream pins) at home every day, and leave the stupid drop shadow on them as your compromise.

Gray jerseys on the road every day.

Blue caps and blue socks, every day.

If you HAVE to have the baker-white unis, make it a once a week thing. Preferably Saturday day games, so I don’t ever have to see them.

All these other permutations and combinations (black jerseys, hybrid caps) make them look like a softball team.

    Since you asked, and all.

  28. Snow whites on Sunday. Cream pins as Monday-Saturday home jersey. Greys as the only road jersey. Blue hats only, blue socks only. On throwback days pull out the 86’s, the Black jerseys, or anything not from Mercury. Knock yourself out Dave Howard. No names on anything (besides throwbacks which had names). No drop shadow.

The Mets front office believes that having less uniforms equates to less jersey sales. False. The truth is since the Mets have 3 colors on the logo, numbers, etc (Blue on Orange on Black) their jerseys are very expensive, much more expensive than Yankee jerseys. This price discrepancy has caused many fans, myself included, to refuse to purchase. (The ones with just blue numbers and name on the back just look dumb)

Finally I’ve said this a million times and will say it a million times more, the Mets brought NL baseball back to New York. We adopted Orange from the Polo Grounds, and Blue from Ebbits Field. Why not Black from the Giants as well? Because black and blue look terrible together.

Sorry to write a book here Shannon. I’ve been reading everyday for a couple years now. You do a great job representing us Mets fans who want a more respectable franchise.

    1. @FFrost welcome, thanks for reading and thanks for that last sentence. It means a lot.

I’m squinting, have to get my glasses. Don’t get old fellas.

  29. As someone in favor of the black, and the all white (and generally against pinstripes)…I could actually live with this treaty, Shannon. The black Fridays only…sure–good compromise. I could live with this schedule of uniforms. Nice work.

  30. I think the Mets should modify the 86 unis and use them all the time. I liked the racing stripes down the shoulders and legs and we would be the only team wearing them now. Use the cursive New York from the 87 road jerseys and make both jerseys button-down. For an alternate, I think a blue top with Orange white orange stripes on the sleeves with the NY logo on the left breast would be a cool change of pace. I dont like the pinless whites because our new stadium already looks like it is trying to be Ebbets field. our team shouldnt look like it is trying to be the Dodgers. Dodger blue, Giant orange, Yankee pinstripes.

  31. As for CIti FIeld, Blue or Green walls, only Division champions or higher displayed in the banner section and the following numbers: 37 14 41 42 17 8 31. I would also like to see the 2 championship flags displayed more prominently. But the Wilpons would probably rather see a 1955 world champions flag front and center and shove 69 and 86 in the basement.

  32. Its to just go with Blue and Orange no more black it was cool at frist but it is ols very old the blue hats are the bet

  33. Its to just go with Blue and Orange no more black it was cool at frist but it is ols very old the blue hats are the best
