Terry Collins said “MLB put out an edict” — Mets wearing FDNY, NYPD hats pregame, but not allowed in-game.

As far as I know they are collecting our hats in order to auction them for various 9/11 charities. For the families of the victims.

Josh Thole said #Mets players will discuss wearing hats anyway. “What are they going to do? They’re going to fine us?”

The Mets won’t be wearing the hats, Thole said. “As much as we would like to as a team, MLB is coming down really hard on it.”

UPDATE 9:27pm

As the night went on it was reported that MLB’s decision was made by Joe Torre.  Torre, pictured below, was the manager of the New York Yankees in 2001.

  1. It better not be because the Mets have to wear the ugly MLB stupid, stars and stripes cap that they make $$$ on and claim to donate a “portion” of the sales revenue to troops or 9/11 families … MLB should be ashamed of themselves if that’s the case.

These hats are huge part of Mets history.

    1. Wear them…MLB will get hell from the public if they fine the Mets for that…what a PR disaster that would be…fining the NY Mets for honoring fallen heroes.

  2. That is a good point Joe. Like Jake Plummer did wearing Pat Tillman’s number in marker for the rest of the season when Tillman was killed. The NFL fined him I believe 5000 dollars a week. That Stars and Stripes cap is ugly this season anyway.

  3. ESPN crew talked about it…said that MLB decided this before the season…it was kind of a dig at MLB…they said they expected the hats the Mets wore after 9/11. They said MLB feels caps are sacrosanct…They ended saying the Mets are wearing their regular cap (unfortunately its the hybrid).

  4. Apparently thole is more concerned about the loan the mets have to pay back to MLB than doing the right thing. Way to go mets you should have told bud to shove it. The real mets did just that 10 years ago.

  5. It’s sad that the mets players, the owner and MLB let this become a “thing” tonight. Besides how does a second year catcher become the player rep for the union?
