Your revisionist history that the Mets should not have signed Cespedes is nonsense

It is November 30th, 2016.  The Mets have been to the World Series in 2015.  They made the wild card in 2016.  They have FIVE ACES.

Yoenis Cespedes, after dragging the 2015 uphill to the playoffs, is coming off a season where he hit .280 31 and 86.  He is the most exciting player on the offensive side of things to hit Cii Field…well…ever.

And he has just signed a 4 year deal with the Astros.

Here’s how that would have played out….

STUPID WILPONS

CHEAP OWNERS

SELL THE TEAM

BOYCOTT

And the newspapers would have fanned the flames.  Just when the Mets have put all the pieces together they cheap out and blah blah blah.

So the Mets signed Cespedes.   Here’s why, via MLB.com

Over Cespedes’ first season and a half in New York, the Mets were 106-74 with him in the starting lineup and an 18-23 without him

In that same article…

“This is what we targeted,” Wilpon said. “This is what we hoped for. And to have it come back and be able to get it done this quickly is great. … New York wants a winner. He obviously makes us win.”

New York wants a winner.  So Jeff Wilpon signed someone who was helping the Mets win games.

You cannot have this both ways people.

So those of you with your newspaper, your blog, your radio show, your tweets, and your boycotts, stop acting like you didn’t want this signing.

The new narrative is that this was a mistake.  I don’t really want to go all Andy Martino on you, but was the David Wright signing a mistake?  Long term contract and the Mets aren’t getting much out of it.  Seems like a mistake, no? But nobody goes there because….?

Cut it out.  It was a good signing.  As we know nothing ever works out in Queens.  Just add this to the list.  Good signing.
