The Commish: Replace The Winter Meetings with The MLB Free Agent Auction

Welcome back to The Commish, a series of articles in which I try to save baseball from dying.

You know how the last few days you’ve been salivating at every little trade rumor?

Well here’s what we’re going to do.  We are going to steal an idea from the India Premier League, a cricket league, that I find pretty innovative.

What you’re looking at here is their Player Draft.

Now here’s what I want to do.

Let’s get rid of the Winter Meetings and lock everyone in a room with TV Cameras for three nights.

All Free Agents must be signed during this period.  ALL.  If you’re not signed by the end of the three days, you don’t play.

Our commissioner goes to the podium and says, “Would anyone like to bid on Bryce Harper” and we have an auction.   Live, on television.  (We can work out the order of Free Agents some other time, as a quick thought I will say in reverse order of service time).

Should we bid?  Should we wait?

Imagine Jeff and Bromance Wags sitting there doing this LIVE.  You’d watch the fudge out of that.  Social media would explode.  This would be better than the Late Fall Meetings combined with the NFL Draft.  It would be more exciting than an actual game.

“We have three years, $30 million….do I hear $35 million….the Yankees bid Three Years 35 Million…..going once, going twice….the Red Sox bid Four Years 50 million.  Do I hear 55….”

Is this not the greatest idea ever?  It is.  Accept that it is.  You’ll watch.
