deGrom’s new Agent wants Mets to extend him – just like his old Agent did!

Oooh a fun report today that if deGrom is not signed to an extension before Opening Day then he will not negotiate during the season.

Now if you’re the Mets GM, you probably don’t like ultimatums.  One such ultimatum came from deGrom’s Agent Brodie Van Wagenen last summer!

“Jacob has expressed interest in exploring a long-term partnership that would keep him in a Mets uniform for years to come.

“If the Mets don’t share same interest, we believe their best course of action is to seriously consider trade opportunities now. The inertia of current situation could complicate Jacob’s relationship with the club and creates an atmosphere of indecision.” via USA Today.  (Van Wagenen is like Trump, there’s an old quote for everything.)

Holy cow, this Van Wagenen guy sounds like one tough agent!  I could see where he would be very frustrated with the Mets GM not extending his client!   Surely Van Wagenen was right about this, right?

Maybe whoever the Mets GM is now should consider trading deGrom like Van Wagenen wants!

I’ll tell ya, between demanding his players get long contracts from the Mets and suggesting the owners are colluding, this Van Wagenen guy seems like someone not to be messed with.

COUNTERPOINT:

So #TheNarrative will be Stupid Cheap Wilpons, you should sign DeGrom blah blah.

Ponder that after this season deGrom will be 31.   Sure I’d like to extend him, but how far would you like to extend him?  Pitchers do get hurt you know.

My take:  WAIT.   This thing could go 70-92 and we might be trading Thor to the Yankees come August.  At least we’ll still have 4 more years of Cano.
