The Gazelle Man Starts and other Mets game notes

Nothing too interesting today and I’ve been on conference calls since…I think since Easter….so my brain is fried.

LAST TIME OUT: Gsellman tonight makes his first start since September 27, 2017…Made his season debut in his most recent appearance, August 8 vs. Miami…Threw 1.0 inning and allowed one hit while fanning two batters…Was his first major league action since August 11, 2019.

TRI, TRI AGAIN: Gsellman missed the last month and a half of the 2019 season and first two weeks of the 2020 season with separate bouts of right triceps tightness.

HE’S DONE THIS BEFORE: Tonight’s start will be the 30th of Gsellman’s career, but his first in nearly three years…In 29 career starts the Californian is 11-9 with a 4.60 ERA (80 earned runs/156.2 innings)…In his most recent start, September 27, 2017 vs. Atlanta, Gsellman threw a quality start (6.0 IP, 6 H, ER, BB, 4 K) in the Mets’ 7-1 win over the Braves.

VS. WASHINGTON: Is 2-3 with three saves and a 5.91 ERA in 21 career games (five starts) vs. the Nats…As a starter, he’s 1-2 with a 5.26 ERA (15 earned runs/25.2 innings)…Last started vs. the Nationals on September 22, 2017 (5.0 IP, 4 H, 6 R/5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K).

OH, WHAT A RELIEF IT IS: Gsellman spent all of 2018 and 2019 pitching exclusively as a reliever…In those two seasons, in addition to his one outing thus far in 2020, out of the bullpen, he’s recorded an 8-6 record to go along with 14 saves, 24 holds and a 4.42 ERA (71 earned runs/144.2 innings) in 121 games… In 41 of his 121 relief appearances over the last three seasons, he’s pitched more than 1.0 inning…His 41 relief outings of 1.1 innings or more rank 10th in the majors since the start of 2018.
