Baseball Hall of Immortals – Inductee #85: Roberto Alomar

The man who leads all second basemen in Gold Gloves is the 85th inductee into the Baseball Hall of Immortals.

For 17 years Roberto Alomar defined the second base position.  A 12-time All-Star with 4 different teams, Alomar played more games at second base than all but 2 others in MLB history.

Coming up with the Padres at age 20, Alomar finished third in Rookie of the Year voting in 1988.  Two years later he made his first All-Star appearance.  The following year he won the first of his ten Gold Glove Awards.

More than just a great gloveman, Alomar was gifted at the plate as well.  In 9 of his 17 seasons he hit .300 or more, peaking in 2001 at .336.

When Alomar retired following the 2004 season he had accumulated 2,724 hits (8th among second basemen), 474 stolen bases (5th all-time) and a .300 liftetime batting average.

One of the best all-around second basemen, Roberto Alomar is an Immortal.
