Baseball Hall of Immortals – Inductee #91: Bill Mazeroski

The man who had the first walk-off series-ending homerun in World Series history is the 91st inductee into the Baseball Hall of Immortals.

Bill Mazeroski was not known for his offense.  A career .260, Maz averaged just 64 RBIs and 58 runs scored a year – better than many second basemen of his time (his career oWAR was 19.6) but not really an offensive force.

With the glove however, Mazeroski had no peers.  Widely regarded as one of the greatest fielders at any position, Maz anchored the Pirates infield for 17 seasons.  His 8 Gold Gloves and 10 All Star Game selections at second base were both records at the time.

Maz was an artist at the double play, turning 100 or more of them for 11 consecutive seasons.  His 1,706 twin killings still ranks first among all MLB second basemen.

Of course, any discussion of Mazeroski would not be complete without mentioning his dramatic bottom of the ninth, Game 7 homerun in the 1960 World Series that broke a 9-9 tie and send the Pirates to a 4 games to 3 victory over the Yankees.

The best defensive second baseman of all time, Bill Mazeroski is an Immortal.
