For Pete Alonso, F was for Fail

Hey let’s not all ignore the fact that three of the Home Runs were eliminated.  Pete had a TERRIBLE season.

The final numbers…

.231  16 and 35.  I will grant you that the 16 doesn’t look too bad on the stats sheet.  But you watched the games….was it a meaningful 16?  There was the one against the Yankees, and I think one other that was “big” – but again three of those came at the funeral home this weekend.

WAR?  You millennials still do that right?   Mr. Alonso….

Zero point zero.

61Ks in 208 PA.  That’s the ball not being put in play at a .293 clip.

A .490 SLG?   An .817 OPS?  And those numbers were padded in garbage time.

But now you’re saying blah blah 60 game season soemthing something.

Let’s look at the second half of 2019.

72 games.  .235  23 and 52.     91Ks in 272 PAs.

Now let’s add the second half of 2019 to the 2020 stats and see what this player really is now that the scouts have had a chance to write a book on him.

72+ 57 =   129 Games.

48 + 64 =  112 Hits

272 + 208 = 480 AB

That’s an average of .233, which feels about right, doesn’t it?

23 + 16 HR = 39 HRs

52 + 35 = 87 RBI

91 + 61 = 152 Ks

317 + 239 = 556 PA

So in 129 games Pete will bat .233 with 39 and 87 if I did my math right, which I probably didn’t.

Let’s goose those by 1.25% to get 162 game numbers.

.233  49HRs and 108 RBI

He will also strike out 190 times.

I know the 49 is a nice shiny number….but do you like the rest of his game?  I am sure some of you do!  I hope some opposing GM does!

I see a one dimensional ballplayer with a WAR of 0.0 who had a negative WAR until the meaningless games stat-padding.   His WAR was -0.5 coming into the weekend.  And you guys can’t WAR me for a decade and now decide it’s not important.

That .817 OPS?  49th best in the majors!

.817 was a little better than Famous Oriole Renato Nuñez, but not as good as Famous Athletics Tommy La Stella nor Robbie Grossman or even SAN FRANCISO’S WILMER FLORES who had an OPS of .830 and hit 12 HRs by the way.

It was not as good as Jeff McNeil (.836) who was invisible this summer.  It was not as good as Brandon Nimmo’s .888.  Not as good as Michael Conforto, and most importantly not as good as Dom Smith who finished 7th overall with .993 to tie “best player in baseball” Mike Trout.  You know, Dom Smith, opening day reserve infielder.

You can’t OPS me for a decade and now tell me it doesn’t matter.  I was the one who wanted to do Average, HR and RBI like God intended, but you guys wanted to get all “advanced” stats on me….so now eat your cake.  There are your advanced stats and your comparables.  He isn’t as good as Wilmer Flores, who had a WAR of 1.1 in case you were wondering.

You watched the season.  Do you think Pete was any good at all?   Well….playing that level baseball gets you .233 49 and 108 over the course of a season.   It might look OK on the stat-sheet, but did it look good on your TV?  I say Nay.

Trade Pete.  While you still can.
