Were those tears of guilt for Mets’ Vulgar Pete Alonso?

Oh please Pete…

“I’m gonna be completely honest,” Alonso told reporters via Zoom. “So I found out on Twitter while I was eating my postgame meal and I talked to Zack (Scott), our GM. It was a professional talk. Then I gave (Slater) and (Davis) two big old hugs and I cried at my locker for a little bit.” (via Yahoo Sports)

The Post reminds us…

Over the weekend Mets players, most notably Pete Alonso, referred to Donnie Stevenson, a fictional coach who had helped get the team fired up offensively. Davis chuckled at the mention of Donnie Stevenson and admitted the fictional character probably didn’t help his cause.

“The players were having fun and I know they didn’t mean any harm,” Davis said. “It was a fun time for them, but it probably didn’t help.

Let’s also talk about the media here.

Pete floated the Donnie thing in the press conference.  Now I am not a reporter, but I imagine both the reporter and the league want the players to answer questions and take it seriously.  If a star player like Vulgar Pete is going to get up there and be dishonest with the media then that helps nobody.

But the 2021 Beat, the worst version of the beat yet (the ones who didn’t notice the deGrom story but that’s my next post) just went with the Donnie story as cute.   And it went national.  Yep, there was a fictional character who could help the Mets more that Chili Davis.

Well Pete, I see you are shocked to find out there is gambling going on here.

In 2020 the reason Pete wasn’t hitting home runs was because Chili wasn’t around because of Covid.  In 2021, what’s the excuse going to be – that they fired Chili?  Whose fault is that?
