Howie Rose to NYS Hockey Hall of Fame Mets-Cardinals Game Notes

RHP Jordan Hicks (1-3, 4.15) vs. RHP Max Scherzer (4-1, 2.66)

Max tossed 7.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits while walking two and punching out six in his May 13 start vs. the Mariners…It was the third time this year he pitched 7.0 frames…He did not factor into the decision as the Mets fell, 2-1…This is the first time since July 2-8 last season that his team has lost back-to-back games he has started.

Scherzer’s 32.5 percent strikeout rate is the third- highest ever by a Met in his first seven starts for the team (min. 30.0 innings)… Only Pedro Martinez (34.2 percent) and Nolan Ryan (32.8 percent) have had a higher strikeout rate in their first seven starts in a Mets uniform…Dwight Gooden (30.5 percent) is the only other Met to fan more than 30 percent of his batters faced.

Congratulations are in order to Howie Rose who will be induced into the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame on Sunday, May 22…Rose is part of the first class of inductees to the Hall of Fame…Rose was the play-by-play announcer for the New York Islanders on Fox Sports New York from 1995-2016…He also worked as a play-by-play broadcaster for New York Rangers games on WFAN from 1989-1995, including their Stanley Cup Championship season of 1993-1994…Rose was previously honored with the New York State Sports Broadcasters Award for play-by-play work during the 1994 Stanley Cup Playoffs…In November of 2019, Rose was inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame as well as the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 2012.   The Mets also conveniently forget that at one point there was a Howie Rose rule where he couldn’t be on immediately after the game, and we had to have the Todd Kalas version of Mets Extra.  But now they love howie.

COOKIE’S KIDS PROGRAM: As part of the Cookie’s Kids Program, Carlos Carrasco is partnering with Northwell Health to host pediatric cancer patients from Cohen Children’s Medical Center once a month at Citi Field to share his story and talk with patients and their families…The first visit of the season took place earlier today…Carlos hosted seven patients who saw special sites around Citi Field and received Mets swag and tickets to a future Mets game.
