Rain out info, Niese numbers, and a legacy of bad attendance

All sorts of interesting things in today’s press notes:

rain and has been rescheduled as part of a single-admission,
doubleheader this Thursday afternoon, April 14, starting at 12:10 p.m.

DOUBLEHEADERS: The last time the Rockies and Mets squared off in a doubleheader was July 30, 2009, the first doubleheader in Citi Field’s history…The Mets won game one, 7-0, behind Johan Santana and lost game two, 4-2 as Jonathon Niese took the loss…The last time the Mets swept a doubleheader from the Rockies was August 19, 2004 in a day-night double dip at
Colorado…The last time the Rockies swept a doubleheader from
the Mets was August 21, 1993 at Colorado…New York was 0-1-1 in
doubleheaders in 2010, spliting a pair of games with San Diego on
June 10 at Citi Field and losing both ends of a doubleheader on
September 29 vs. Milwaukee.

THIS DATE IN METS HISTORY: National League baseball officially
returns to New York as the Mets drop their home opener, 4-3, to the
Pirates, before 12,447 fans at the Polo Grounds…Frank Thomas
belts a home run and Sherman Jones suffers the loss on the mound
for the Mets…Tom Seaver pitches in his first major league game on
April 13, 1967…Seaver gets a no-decision as the Mets top
Pittsburgh 3-2 at Shea…Tom hurls 5.1 innings, allows six hits, two
runs, with four walks and eight strikeouts.

Wow – 12,000?  Really?  My grandpa must have gone to town on that in the old Mets Police newsletter which he used to hand out in Times Square while standing on a milk crate.

NIESE IN APRIL: Is 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA (18 earned runs/40.0 innings) in seven career starts during the month…From April 19-April 30, 2010, a stretch of three games, he went 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA (two earned runs/18.0 innings)…Allowed 17 hits, no home runs and struck out 20.

SHAKY STARTS: Has allowed six earned runs in three of his last four starts dating to last season…However, he has not surrendered a home run over this stretch of games.

VS. THE ROCKIES: Niese is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA (10 earned/18.1 innings) in three games, all starts against Colorado…In his three career starts, the Rockies are hitting .301 off of him…Colorado’s total of 22 hits rank fifth most of any team against Niese.

AT HOME: At Citi Field, Niese is 4-7 with a 4.46 ERA (55 earned/111.0 innings) in 20 games, all starts…Has surrendered 10 home runs at Citi Field over those starts

None of those numbers make me feel good.

How often do baseball teams win three times in 31 hours?

The Mets are selling Blue Yogi Berra jerseys

There’s a lot of blue merchandise at Citi Field…it’s great to see the blue jerseys, and I need you guys to start buying some so we can Ditch the Black and get some Blue Alts some time in the future.

Since the Fight For Blue is more important to me than nitpicking why this is a weird jersey to make…

Who doesn’t love Yogi?  Plus it might be worth getting to annoy a Yankees fan.

Mets’ Dickey says nail is OK – WSJ.com

The very underrated WSJ Sports Section has an article about R.A. Dickey who says his nail is 100%.

He also makes sure his diet includes plenty of dairy. He drinks lots of milk. He firmly believes that calcium helps strengthen his nails. He also eats chicken. “Hair and nails are really a combination of protein overflow,” he said. “I’ve obviously never had a problem growing hair, and I definitely don’t have a problem with nail growth.”

I’m no major league pitcher but last week I was wondering if the weather was making it hard for him to grip the ball.

I have a bad feeling about this

A new prospective buyer…this one seems real.

Mr. Cohen, the founder of SAC Capital Advisors LLC whose net worth is estimated by Forbes magazine at $7.3 billion, is a longtime Mets fan who knows its controlling Wilpon family socially.

A hedge fund manager who hangs with the Wilpons.  I’m sure this will end well, it always does.

By the way how is the Ed Kranepool ownership coming?
