How a Lee Mazzilli baseball almost solved my childhood for me

I think the discovery of this baseball has helped me solve my entire childhood.

Here’s what we know about me as previously mentioned on the blog

– I love Lee Mazzilli

– I don’t remember Joe Frazier and the first guy I remember as Mets manager was Joe Torre.

– I met Tom Seaver as a kid, he gave me a 1946 Cardinals baseball, and as an adult I talked with Tom about it.

– I also met Jerry Grote on the Seaver trip.

– I have been a big Mets fan since 1977

– I just found this Lee Mazzilli baseball which is autographed to me and has signatures from Mazz, Kranepool, Lenny Randle….with Torre’s signature in a prominent spot, as if he were the manager.

I called my mom to tell her about the ball and she says it was from the day a nice man named Emmett brought me and my dad out to Shea…ah, now I remember…..and suddenly this all makes sense.

It’s May or June 1977.  I’m 7 years old.  A very impressionable age.  Since Junior is about that age now it’s easy for me to see what registers in his brain and not…he’s kinda sorta aware about baseball but not really but starting to get interested.

So we head out to Shea in May or June 1977 and I get to go on the field and meet Seaver and Grote who are on the roster.  I pin it to May or June because Torre is the manager by then.  (Lenny Randle came to the Mets on April 26, 1977)

By May or June 1977 Seaver is very frustrated and…speculating here…maybe he is starting to tidy up a bit.  Seaver gives me the Cardinals ball from his locker (I remember that very clearly and have asked Tom about it and he told me it was possible since he collected autographs).

On said trip I get an autographed ball from some young player nobody cares about yet named Lee Mazzilli.  It’s signed to ME.

A few weeks later Seaver leaves the Mets, which I remember well, and remember being hurt by.  The nice man I met isn’t a Met any more?????!!!!

That leaves this Lee Mazzilli fellow who signed a ball to me.  He becomes my favorite player, well before poster day and all that.

It’s 1977 and while all the other kids are in love with Reggie Jackson, I become a Mets fan.

Wow, that all makes sense now!!!!

Great story right?  One problem.

That sure looks like a Bobby Valentine autograph on the ball.  Bobby came to the Mets on June 15, 1977 – a date which you should know.

Boom.  My unified theory destroyed.  More years of therapy for me.

I called Mom again to ask her and the best she had was, “Well you went out there a few times.  I remember you came back one day with a bunch of autographs.”

Hmmm.

Well the Seaver thing happened, but now I can’t pin a date on it.

The question now: am I Lee fan because I had the ball, or did I get the ball because I was a Lee fan.  I think it’s the latter.  I’ll let you know what I can uncover from my subconcious.

Lee Mazzilli discusses 1986 Mets

Hello from the airport. Fortunately there is a Donuts Chain here and the iPad has 86% left. I dud see a cool Mets shirt on a nice lady but I’m saving my phone battery at 100% so I can bring you pics from the new home of The Formerly’s tonight.

Media Goon is in charge today, although I have left him a few posts for later in the day. He can be reached at [email protected] if anything comes up.

Meanwhile, here’s a Q&A with Lee Mazzilli from Eveningtribune.com

What was it like to be a part of the 1986 Mets?

It was a special team. It was a very confident team that had a lot of ability and great players, but most importantly they played as a team. That shows when you play together as a team, you win.

..

In other news, The Apple did a funny story about the Mets naming a section “Mets BJ’s Club” or something like that. It has escaped the walls of the Apple and some folks think its a real story. There is an actual section called “BJ’s Clubhouse” which is funny enough.

In the middle of the night I was wondering when the Mets will have no choice but to say no to “bloggers” and what a tough spot that puts them in. Last night’s call had more bloggers than there have been in the past. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be there or even that I should be there – but I wonder what the cutoff will be. The has to be a cutoff right? Terry can do a 9 hour call from anyone with access to Blogger. I don’t have any suggestion, nor a I saying there was someone undeserving on the call or that I have some birthright to be one of the chosen. I just had insomnia and this is what I wondered.

Oh, on the call, Cerrone led off by asking Colactus what the team’s weakness is. Terry’s pause was…

…forever. He went with fear of injuries.

Terry Collins and the Mets bloggers conference call

Mets Blog has a summary of tonight’s conference call with the Mets bloggers. Please give them some hits since it’s a lot of work to transcribe.

I found Terry to be more “no nonsense” than Sandy is…totally subjective and based upon speaking to Sandy twice and Terry once…but that limited sample makes me think Sandy’d throw back a root beer with me but Terry has stuff to get back to and needs to get this done so he can back to business.

I asked about managing a season vs. a game.  I observed that some managers will chase a loss, and go through a bullpen when on the wrong side of 6-2…(Willie, cough)…whereas other managers will use one set of guys for a win, and another set in a losing situation.

I was quite pleased with Terry’s response.  Both my Q  and the A were longer than this summary, but as I have mentioned – it’s hard transcribing ths stuff and props to Michael Baron for doing this.

Shannon Shark: Managing a season vs. a game – how do you approach the bullpen over the course of the season?

I learned from Walter Alston – he told me don’t be afraid to get beat every once in a while, instead of burning the bullpen out in a game you can’t win. I think you need to read your bullpen enough to know who is rested and can give multiple innings on a given night.

I hope Willie Randolph reads that part in bold.

When/If a longer version of the transcript pops up hopefully we can share the full exchange…but I was pleased enough with the response that I signed off with “I’m gonna love you.”  Terry’s not looking to have root beer with me.

Had I needed a backup question (it’s smart to prepare one in case something has been answered before your turn) I would have asked something about how getting fired can make a person stronger.  Metsgrrl did…

Caryn Rose: Some players have described you as a “players manager”. How do you feel about that, and what does that mean to you?

I think it means a lot – in the past, I was probably not a players manager. Through the years, I have realized the importance of constant communication, and never taking anything for granted. That is done with experience – from my first few years, I was worried about only managing the game, and thinking everyone was on board with it. I look at it as a compliment.

Great self-awareness, and a great answer.

I’m excited.

Thanks once again to the NYM’s for setting this up and for inviting me.

With that, I’m on the road now.  Media Goon is in charge of the beat and can be reached at [email protected] and @mediagoon on twitter.  I’ll be checking in, but will be keeping an abnormal-for-me posting schedule.  I have a few things lined up but not toomany since it’s Opening Day.  Expect some really late night posts and some “bored at the airport” twitter chats.

(Supposedly) John McNamara on Game 6

Swirsky is the current owner of the Buckner Ball

As an interesting aside, Swirsky has what he claims to be a note from 86 Red Sox manager John McNamara regarding the Buckner Ball. The text of that note follows:

Seth:I hate to remember the 86 W.S. — it still is bitter. Bill Buckner is not to blame for that loss as we had chances to score more & didnt capitalize; The wild pitch or passed ball that tied the game was the “major” factor in that inning. The ground ball just ended the game.John

The Mets Pack Their Bags

Its official the Mets are packing their bags and leaving PSL. No not because of what Shannon posted earlier. It’s because there are only two days left of spring training.
Friday is coming up fast and the Mets regular season opener is almost here.

The Mets tweeted this pic today:

@NewYorkMets With 2 spring training games to go the Mets equipment truck is being packed up!

Baseball season is almost upon us folks. Now maybe if we can get spring type weather in time for the home opener I will really be happy. Let’s Go Mets.
