Insider: Most Mets Don’t Like Black Unis

I was down in Florida recently and attended several games, including a Mets-Braves game at Lake Buena Vista (pics to come soon).

Before the game I had the opportunity to chat with a few of the Mets.  One of them (not saying who) directly told me:

“…most of the guys in the clubhouse would love to ditch the black [uniforms and trim] and go with a blue alternate instead….we have a new clubhouse guy and he asked Dave [Howard] about it. Dave told him it was purely a marketing decision, that the black sells.”

So the guys in uniform AND the clubhouse guy all want to do away with the black.

The uniform discussion lasted several minutes and included thoughts on alternate shadings of blue (going back to a lighter shade) as well as orange trims.

Oh and as Shannon has pointed out many many times, if you look at the top selling items in the online Mets store, almost all are blue.  Dave Howard, are you paying attention?

Today’s special Mets ceremonial first pitch

Despite my poking at the Mets all day, I do like being able to circulate stories like this one (although I wish the initial circumstance were different)…good job by the team, and speedy recovery to Sgt. Tavera

Terry Collins and the entire team joined Sergeant Joel Tavera, who is celebrating his 24thbirthday today, in front of the mound for today’s ceremonial first pitch.

Sergeant Tavera of the United States Army was serving in Iraq in March of 2008 when his Humvee was hit by five rockets. He suffered burns to 60 percent of his body.

A native of Queens (Flushing) and life-long Mets fan, Sergeant Tavera received a Purple Heart and Bronze star for his heroic actions. He is continuing his rehab in the Tampa, FL area where he and his family will be recipients of the “Building Homes for Heroes” house. The players talked with Sergeant Tavera and signed his jersey, including his favorite players Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, Francisco Rodriguez and David Wright.

He stares into home plate, working the ball, with that penetrating look that once struck fear in even the most jacked-up, steroid-soaked sluggers. That is pre-“Who’s Your Daddy” Pedro Martinez, the Yankee-killer who won three Cy Young Awards and dazzled the Fenway faithful until his 2004 exit. Today, we learned that the oil painting entitled “El Orgullo y la Determinacion (Pride and Determination)” will join another work featuring a famous Sox hero, Carlton Fisk, in the National Portrait Gallery.

If black doesn’t sell, change the product

With yesterday’s news that no Mets jersey was in the top 20 sellers, I thought it might help the marketing department to consider that perhaps their product has gone stale.

A 20 year old man in 1998 is now in his 30’s. Perhaps his closet is filled with Black Franco and Piazza jerseys.

Why not offer him a new product?

Why not use the upcoming 50th anniversary to offer retro jerseys? Actual retro style jerseys, not the fake creams with dropshadow.

A nice pinstriped white jersey. No black. No black dropshadow. Like Casey wore.

Pair that up with a nice dark blue (Fred, that’s Brooklyn Dodger blue btw) cap with a blue button on top.

Offer a nice new road jersey in a similar scheme.

Put a nice patch on the sleeve.

And…if black sells, except for the pesky part where it isn’t selling, you can still sell black! Under the terms of the Treaty of Flushing you can wear black every Friday, and you can even have “Anything Goes” Sunday where the team wears whatever you can dream of.

Imagine….tradition AND products to sell. A brand. An identity. Seems to work just fine uptown.

You tell me which of the following pictures looks stupid?

Come on guys…take a look. Fred, how can you say no to Dodger Blue?

If black sells why does nobody wear it when hanging with Mr. Met?

The Mets sent this out to remind you about Mr. Met’s landing, but it raises some questions.

I thought black sells? The Mets fans in this photo all seem to prefer the original colors (except the one dope matching a hybrid with pinstripes).

What a statistical anomaly that these fans left their Franco jerseys home.

Also, what’s with the kid on the bottom right? Did they Photoshop his cap in?

On the bottom left there’s another blue cap. Is there even a person attached to it?
