Looks like Mets will host 2013 All Star Game

John Heyman tweeted this earlier today.  I know this story made the rounds earlier this week, but it’s getting traction and it’s fun to talk about something other than Madoff.

The Mets will host the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field, people with knowledge of the situation told SI.com.

While the decision isn’t being characterized as “official,” plans are already in the works.

Maybe when we get done with King of Piazza (which resumes tomorrow) we can do some All Star logos (Media Goon and Randy get cracking, you guys have gotten better since the mocks you made a year ago.)

The Mets will have a nice run of marketing…’12 being the 50th season, ’13 being the ASG and a 73 anniversary and well 4’s used to be a Shea anniversary but I guess we don’t do that any more.  A 45th of 1969 seems like going to the well too many times on that.

I have to remind myself not everyone reads every day – “King of Piazza” is a contest in which folks are sending in “Piazza Stuff” to see who can be king.  There is no prize other than the ability to call yourself KoP.

Got my green Murphy on to meet the fellas tonight at Optimistiic Black Apple (formerly the Mets Bloggers Winter Conference, seems I was stressing folks out by calling it that, which kind of proves the point that it’s all in the marketing.)

The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t

Look at this picture.

It’s great yet horrible.

It’s horrible in that it stinks that Madoff ruined people’s lives. It’s horrible that yet again people are talking about the Mets negatively. It’s horrible that yet again we are talking about off field drama.

Yesterday I tweeted @metspolice that the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t. Sure things haven’t always gone that well in Flushing, but I would worry about the Dolans aka Cablevision or GiganticCorp coming in.

Even a Mark Cuban type is fun if you are a blogger or a sports talk host, but is that the kind of owner that let’s the baseball people do their thing, or does that wind up being Steinbrenner at his 1980’s worst.

The photo is also horrible because of the black Mets logo. Awful.

I think this is THE topic right now so I’ve parked a few of the random posts that were scheduled for today (and yesterday). I’ll also extend King of Piazza by a day or two.

Wilpons Exploring Selling a Minority Share in the Mets

Twitter was a fire today with the news of the upcoming announcement from the Mets today. In a way it’s a big deal, because they are admitting to the problems they had with the Bernie Maddoff lawsuit and not just saying they are fine fiscally.

The Wilpons are looking to shore up financially by selling a minority interest in the team.

Here’s the press release:

As Sterling Equities announced in December, we are engaged in discussions to settle a lawsuit brought against us and other Sterling partners and members of our families by the Trustee in the Madoff bankruptcy. We are not permitted to comment on these confidential negotiations while they are ongoing. However, to address the air of uncertainty created by this lawsuit, and to provide additional assurance that the New York Mets will continue to have the necessary resources to fully compete and win, we are looking at a number of potential options including the addition of one or more strategic partners. To explore this, we have retained Steve Greenberg, a Managing Director at Allen & Company, as our advisor.

Regardless of the outcome of this exploration, Sterling will remain the principal ownership group of the Mets and continue to control and manage the team’s operations. The Mets have been a major part of our families for more than 30 years and that is not going to change.

As we have said before, we are totally committed to having the Mets again become a World Series winner. Our fans and all New Yorkers deserve nothing less.”

Brian ups the ante in King of Piazza

Look out boys….

Alright, Shannon. It’s time for me to step up and claim my spot as King Piazza.

Here is a Mike Piazza photobucket album (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v59/baymenxpac/Piazza/) dedicated to my submission. I don’t want to inundate your inbox with a ton of attachments. So here goes:

Included is: my Piazza jersey collection: Authentic snow white and road black Diamond Collection. All Star Batting Practice jerseys from 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004 (I missed 2002 and my 2005 — his last All Star season as a Met — I got Beltran instead). It also is about to include a 1997 Florida Marlins authentic Piazza jersey. Waiting on that to come back from the stitcher.

From the novelty collection: Some Generation Piazza literature, Piazza pennant, a signed Piazza picture and a Piazza game used bat piece. Also some really cool unique stuff like my 2000 NL Champs 22 kt gold cards, my Piazza bobbleheads and statue and something kind of cool a random: sketches from a sketchbook I did in the summer of 1999 (I was in 9th grade at the time, so obviously the artistry isn’t the BEST).

Not pictured is my yet to arrive Piazza Marlins jersey, my Piazza All Star hats from 1999-2001 and my Piazza garbage can.

Let me know how I stack up. I’m not sure if I’m forgetting anything, but….if I am I’ll send it over.

Enjoy!

Is Randy: The King Of Piazza?

Randy from The Apple is gearing up for tomorrow night’s Mets Bloggers Winter Conference by trying to become King Of Piazza.  Or is he tricking us into mentioning his new site design? And why did I use “us” there. It’s me.  Goon didn’t co-write this post.

Some unusual baseball cards for KOP.  The first is made of gold and contains what are either pieces of Piazza and Jeter’s bats or some leftover cuts of wood from the local Home Depot.  The other is one of my favorite baseball cards made with some kind of acetate that mimics stained glass.

I dunno.  Everything at The Apple is fake and Randy is darn good at photoshop.  How can I trust these are real items?

Is Randy the King Of Piazza or are YOU?

I want to reach out to Mike Piazza and get him to post something so we can ask “Is Mike Piazza The King of Piazza?”  You’d swear I’m out of town and make up something just so I’d have a lot of pre-written material.
