(It was a Jeter shirt)

Blue Gary Carter T-Shirt.  Cool.

Odd color Piazza shirt with white letters?

Pedro Martinez, Wally Backman, Carlos Beltran

A few things that I think were underdiscussed by Mets fans this week thanks to Omar-gate and the trade deadline.

Pedro Martinez aka 4 inning Pedro actually went five innings for Lehigh Valley.   He gave up five runs.

Wally Backman was fired as manager of Joliet this week.  His record in his second season was 24-42.  He will not be the next manager of the New York Mets.

Metsblog mentioned some scary scary Carlos Beltran news here that talks about Beltran possibly missing a lot of the 2010 season if he needs microfracture surgery.   That’s very scary.  You can find a first baseman, you can find a shortstop, you could even come up with a slugging third baseman if Wright catches the injury bug – but replacing an All-Star centerfielder is a challenge.

Correo Electrónico Sobre Los Mets

I’m now convinced equipment manager Charlie Samuels is messing with me.   The traditional white w/pinstriped uniforms (with blue hats) made a very rare Friday appearance last night – with a small Los written at an awkward angle.

Thanks to a link from Mets Blog I got lots of comments about this uniforms…some folks calling me an idiot, which is fine….plenty of folks who don’t like it, and a couple of great lines such as:

How about we win Los Games?

and

TheWilpons will like it because it almost says Los Angeles.

For me, the issue is that the uniform looks stupid.   For others, it brings up the perceived notion that the Mets went out of their way to sign Hispanic players when Omar Minaya first took over.   Carlos Delgado of the Marlins openly said he was offended by Omar’s pitch.   A few years earlier, Bobby V wanted to sign anyone Japanese.   Remember Shinjo and “the Japanese Greg Maddux?”    A team should just sign the best players available.

I don’t want Mets Police to turn into a site where we argue about ethnicity, but the franchise wore Los Mets jerseys last night, and this site is for the cranky fans to be heard, so buckle your seatblets and here we go.

I apologize in advance for some of the feistier nationality related comments, but I do think it’s important to show just how much fans are upset, and you’d last three seconds on WFAN if you tried to start this discussion on air.

Real Stupid Idea, I feel bad for the non-latino players that were kinda forced into wear a Los Mets Jersey tonight. I don’t think the Mets will change their jersey for any other culture. As Mets fans we know the team is 85% Latino and that’s no accident…just don’t throw it in our face.
Just try something new….Like winning Los games!!!!

are u KIDDING me, is this a joke, i get that a lot of good ball players come from Hispanic decent but this is an absolute travesty, Hey Mr. Minaya i get it that u happen to be of Spanish decent as well but what is this. What about the die hard fans from yesteryear. I have to say that this jersey as a fan makes me hate the team even more now than i did when you traded away Xavier Nady. Any real Mets fan should be (tick)ed about this jersey because the team that many people grew up loving just became a joke. Los (bleep)ing Mets, way to single-handedly ruin an organization, and for the record, there are still Light skinned players available that are quite better than our current roster.

This is another reason why the Mets will always be 2nd class to the other NY team. I grew up watching the Yankees but started watching the Mets regularly when Willie Randolph was hired to manage. The it all started to change under Omar Minaya’s GM reign. Everyone with the exception of David Wright, Francoeur and a few others everyone is hispanic. Not that I mind but the team is in NY – not the Dominican. We don’t need ‘Los’ Mets we just need the Mets and someone who can run the team who knows what they’re doing, not just making the entire team all hispanic. Geez – sorry to vent and get off the subject of ‘Los’ Mets but when I start I can’t stop.

On Saturday they should put “The Wilpons” on their jerseys. Or maybe “Dodgers“.

If the Mets don’t honor all other culture’s by altering their jersey’s then I will say they are bias to the Latino community. We are a melting pot and the “Los Mets” are supported by every culture.

So here’s the real question for everyone.   Is the issue that the jersey was dumb, or that fans are mad at the perceived “Omar likes Spanish speaking players” signings?
If the Mets wore the jerseys on the left for Irish Night would there be an uproar (ignore that it would be weird to wear New York at home.)
I think this jersey looks nice as something you could wear as a civilian.
If the Mets showed up with this and it said “Nua Eabhrac” (I think that’s Gaelic for New York) I know I’d complain.  By the way, Gaelic for Mets is “Mets.”

Tom Seaver, Marine.

Published: July 31, 2009
Tom Seaver recalls how it felt to pitch an almost perfect game for the Mets 40 years ago.

This story has a good anecdote from Tom about being in the Marine reserves on a day he was scheduled to pitch.   Different times!
