Pirates Day

The dude over at Faith and Fear has a disaster plan in case the Mets ever pack up and move to Mercury.  In a world without Mets who would you root for?

His premise:

Option A was to give up baseball forever, which may have been the most likely course. I’d have become one of those guys who told you he saw a triple play at Ebbets Field once but hasn’t watched a game since. Baseball isn’t hockey or any other take-it-or-leave-it activity to me. To not have the Mets would be to not have baseball…probably. But who knows?

Option B, theoretically, would have been to have grudgingly accepted the Mets in their new guise as (Jason came up with this name years ago) the Charlotte Demographic or whatever they’d be called. I know a whole clutch of old New York Giants fans who’ve gotten by for more than a half-century as San Francisco Giants fans. I can’t picture that being me, though. True, I nominally remain a Nets fan even though they left Long Island in 1977, but that’s basketball and New Jersey isn’t far away. But the New York Mets mean far more to me than the New York Nets ever did, even when Dr. J was slamming me home two ABA championships that I still cherish. I can’t see the Anytown USA Mets having any kind of imaginary pull on me.

He picks the Pirates.

A friend of mine wonder if there’s some old Philly A’s fan or Boston Braves fan out there.

New York Yankees Game Rained Out

Tonight’s Yankee game has been rained out.

I mention this for two reasons:

1.  I like when teams are fan friendly.  If you have Yankees tickets for tonight you can just go home after work.  You don’t have to go to the Bronx, pay $19 (or whatever) to park, sit in the rain, buy two beers, kill your Friday night – and then get told there’s no game, or a 10:35 first pitch.  I wish teams would do this more often.

2.  This tweet is hilarious:

nyp_joelshermanGame at Yankee Stadium rained out tonight, yet the under-over for HRs nevertheless remains 2.

Amazin’ Avenues Amazing Mets Injury Doll

Head on over to Amazin Avenue.  They have a picture of Mr. Met with all the various injuries the Mets have.  An arrow pointing to his head that says “yips” and that sort of thing.  Hilarious.  If I post it then I’m a thief so click the link for a good laugh.

Mets Lost 4th Most Days to DL in 7 Years

Trolling around the blogosphere, I stumbled across this great analysis of the disabled list from 2002 – 2008 (thanks to www.beyondtheboxscore.com). I won’t regurgitate all of it here, but a few things really jumped out at me:

  • In total number of trips to the DL, the Mets placed 3rd among all teams, trailing only the Rangers and Reds
  • The Mets had the third most average days on the DL for pitchers, behind the Orioles and Twins
  • Total days lost, Mets were fourth, behind the Reds, Angels, and Diamondbacks

Again, this is only through 2008.

Over the last few years the Mets trainers and staff have seemingly completely mismanaged their players’ health. From the Ryan Church fiasco last year, to Billy Wagner’s arm, to Delgado and now Reyes, I really have to wonder how Ray Ramirez has remained the Head Trainer.
