You Wanted The New York Mets Core Broken Up Didn’t You?

My advice to all Mets fans once again is to take the day off.

No WFAN, no 1050, even stay off dopey blogs like this one.

It's a nice sunny day. 85 degrees. An off day – go enjoy it.

I caught some sports talk last night and again this morning and the lunatics are all on their cell-phones.

You can either enjoy the nice weather, or you can grab your pitchforks and torches and storm Citi Field.

Take a deep breath before you do.

While you're firing Omar, ask yourself who you want in the GM's office. Tony Bernazard? That's who you're going to get…the man who has Jeff Wilpon's ear.

Fire Manuel? Suddenly Jerry is awful because he didn't argue a play? Razor Shines told him he missed third. It was obvious. Nothing to argue.

Then there's "break up the core!". In April you idiots booed David Wright – who then started hitting .450. Maybe we should have traded him to free up a position for Murphy.

Murphy? He went from being the golden child to the problem in about three weeks. That double play looked nice last night. He's one at bat away from being a rookie, and it is May. Cut him some slack.

Maybe the Mets should lose Reyes and Delgado, you know, break up the core. What would the lineup look like without those guys? Have you been enjoying it?

Y'all seem to have forgotten that a month ago the story was pitching. Well, Livan and Redding earned their money this week, so another crisis has been averted.

It's baseball. Baseball is streaky. You had a great week and a half, now you had a lousy week. You're going to have a lousy weekend too unless a power hitting shortstop falls from the trees.

Today is "pile on the Mets day" and tomorrow will be "wild speculation rumors day" because of the off-day.

Go outside. Francesca will be there tomorrow. He'll be fine without you.

The Mystery of Tom Seaver’s Yellow New York Mets Jersey

Carlo, a Mets Police reader who has hooked me up with a few things (and wrote the charity-idea article the other day) posed a good question…

I was taking a look at this awesome looking ’69 replica jersey:(on the left), and I was wondering, did the Mets in the 60’s wear white, or these off-whites? In that picture, it looks off-white, but in actual pictures of the team, it looks white, but its also 1969 camera quality, so I’m really not sure.

I was wondering if you had any idea. If the Mets had actually worn the off whites, I would have voted for them in that survey (which by the way, is now closed down)  I was just wondering if you had any insight.

So that’s a little before my time, but Osh41 is both a Seaver geek and a uniform geek so I kicked it to him…He said  i see seaver closing shea and wearing an off white shirt, i watch the 69 series and his jersey is more white.  i see pics of the team and they are more white than cream.

I don recall the Yankees jerseys looked yellow at their closing ceremony…and Yogi Berra even commented on it (paraphrasing) that he didn’t recall them ever being so yellow.

It seems to be a quirky Cooperstown Collection thing.  I know Osh41 has pointed out numerous incorrect number fonts on various jerseys (he’ll probably email me when he reads this).

Jon Matlack Throws Back to Back Shutouts For 1977 New York Mets (Centerfield Maz)

Our friends over at Centerfield Maz are kind enough to let us borrow entire articles when we choose.   Here’s a cool one to educate the youngsters.  This is before even my time…my first season follow them but I don’t remember this.

May 1977: Jon Matlack Throws Back to Back Shut Outs

The 1977 Mets didn’t give us fans much to cheer about. It was the beginning of one of the worst periods in Met history. During the middle of May left hander Jon Matlack gave us something to cheer about, he pitched back to back shut outs. On May 13, 1977 he threw a seven hit complete game shutout against the 1st place Dodgers. Matlack only walked one batter while striking out four. The Mets provided all their offense in the 1st inning as Lenny Randle & Dave Kingman both homered. Randle lead off with a solo shot & Kong hit a two run bomb. Matlack earned his second win of the season in front of a Shea crowd just under 20,000.

In his next start he went up against Jim Barr & the San Francisco Giants to tiny crowd of 7000 on a Wednesday at Shea. Barr was good only allowing 1 run through seven innings. Matlack was better, he didn’t allow any runs, didn’t walk any body struck out 7 and only allowed 5 hits.

It was the 10th time Mets pitchers had thrown back to back shut outs. Tom Seaver & Jerry Koosman had done it four times each & Jim McAndrew once.

Lenny Randle came up big for Matlack again getting 3 hits and scoring both Mets runs. In the 3rd inning he doubled and reached 3rd on an error, then scored on a wild pitch. In the 8th he singled and later scored on Jerry Grotes base hit offf Gary Lavelle.

Red Hats For The New York Mets This Weekend

Sigh.

Hate the hats more than the jerseys.  I’ll deal with the jerseys for a weekend.

What other colors go with red and white that would look good on a hat….oh I know….red!  no, black!   Red, white and red it is!

(somehow I missed this the other day)

New York Post Says Mets Trade Of Kazmir Worst Trade In Last 5 Years…

This is a fun list:

It shows how bad some of the trades have been….I saw Heath Bell throw one pitch in the spring and grabbed him for my fantasy team.   There’s a whole bunch of hideous Mets trades on here, but to be fair would you rather have Kris Benson or John Maine…..Would you rather have Lastings Milledge or a bag of BBQ potato chips…..
