Mailbag: Obstructed Views At Mets Citi Field

As I sit here wondering
a) why are they wearing black – did they enjoy losing in them yesterday?
b) will SNY ever run a commercial for this blog
c) should I just go to bed because they ain’t winning tonight
d) how did “Livan Day” become one of the good days

I share with you this email.

Topic:  “Obstructed View From Mets Citi Field Section 525 R…“:

Yesterday, (4/19), I took my son to the game. We sat in Sec. 502, Row 3, Seats 3 & 4 and couldn’t see rightfield. The view of the pitcher’s mound and the batter’s box was marred by plexiglass. The game was unwatchable. And unlistenable too, as a speaker was right behind us. “Everybody clap your hands…”

(Is that back?  Oh nooo…I thought it was gone).

We decided to leave our seats and explore the place. It seems as if everything is more important than the game itself. Food, plazas, walkways, a bridge beyond centerfield, all beautiful, but can we just enjoy THE GAME, please?

Many seats on many decks should be classified as obstructed view. Depending on where you sit, you can’t see large chunks of the field. How could they do this? They say they’ve created an intimate ballpark. They say they’ve brought the fan closer to the action. But at what cost if you can’t watch an outfielder field a carom? And, by the way, I don’t buy the quirky outfield wall. Most old ballparks, Fenway, Wrigley, have these quirks because of zoning laws, or there’s a school playground, or a highway, the quirks at Citi Field are TOTALLY ARBITRARY! In other words, bullcrap.

The overhanging seats that bring the moneyed fan closer, kills the view for the rest of us who can’t afford to pay hundreds of dollars to see a ballgame. Again, the true baseball fan who loves the game has been compromised. We managed to find seats where only a small part of leftfield was obstructed. Of course, the view was obstructed by expensive field level seats. By the way, security doesn’t seem to care about the Promenade Level. Many fans were confused and there was no one to help. Whereas, when we were down on the lower levels, there must have been one or two guards at every section.

Mets Are Second Most Valuable MLB Team Behind Yankees

I want my blog to be cool and since this will be the trendy blog story tomorrow, I’ll be cool now…
Google tells me…

NEW YORK — One-third of Major League Baseball teams declined in value over the past year while the New York Yankees’ worth increased 15 per cent to US$1.5 billion, according to the annual estimates by Forbes magazine.
The Washington Nationals took the biggest hit during the recession, down 12 per cent to US$406 million. The Atlanta Braves dropped 10 per cent and the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners each were off nine per cent, the magazine said Wednesday.
Bolstered by their new US$1.5-billion stadium, the Yankees showed the top increase and remained the most valuable franchise in the majors. The New York Mets, also boosted by a new ballpark, were second in value ($912 million) and increase (11 per cent). Boston (US$833 million), the Los Angeles Dodgers (US$722 million) and the Chicago Cubs (US$700 million) followed at the top.

Still Even More Mets Citi Field Videos

The folks over at No You’re A Towel sent us a message on twitter (@metspolice) and wanted to share this with us.

I think it’s very cool when the blogs unite and share stuff, Mack’s Mets had asked to grab something off Mets Police (everyone, go ahead…just hook me up with a link), and Amazin’ Avenue , Mets Blog , Kranepool Society and our Yankees friends at New Stadium Insider are all very good to us (and my apologies if I’m dissing anyone).

So in my usual way, here’s a quick taste, then you guys do the right thing and give Towel  some hits.

Now go visit Towel for A Look At Citi Field.

Padres File Complaint Against Mets Citi Field

I heard this mentioned on tv (radio?) over the weekend but now see other sources.

Even the visiting bullpen has obstructed views!

The Padres (jerks that can’t play at 4:05) have filed a complaint with MLB.  The view is “obstructed” (ha!) by the home bullpen and fences.

The solution may be installing televisions.  I wonder if Mets VP David Howard knows about this?  I don’t think he has been to the Promenade so I doubt he’s been to the visiting bullpen.

Last night I heard Steve Somers telling fans to watch the scoreboard replay of plays you can’t see from your seats.

Um, does anyone understand why we go to games?  Why don’t we all go sit at Citi Field when they are on the road?  We can pay $15 to watch the game on TV, just like when they are home.

Steve you’re awesome but you clearly have not sat upstairs yet.  I reiterate my invitation to “the media” to come sit upstairs  and get the real story.  Get out of the press box and the WFAN hook up seats.

The Cold, Foggy and Quiet New Yankee Stadium

One friend points out even on YES there are obstructed views now thanks to the netting. He is predicting a new premium channel called YES Grandstand in which you’d pay extra for a view from above the net. I wonder if that comes with a fan for behind your neck?

I mentioned Suzyn and Sterling were saying it was freezing last night.  Friends in Westchester and Northern NJ reported it was “light jacket” weather, one Mets Police reader said it was 58 in NJ, and here in the bunker I was outside in shorts.  Accuweather, the Yankee Stadium experts, says the low temperature yesterday in the Bronx was 47 degrees.  “Freezing?”   It’s only 53 out right now.

I’m hearing from fans who were there last night that it is quite cold at New Yankee.

I enjoyed the fog that was there when I came back to the game for the 9th.  I’m convinced the ghosts like this new place.

Switching between Cardinals (Mets) and Yankees last night, the difference in crowd noise was quite shocking. It’s as if they don’t mike the crowd in the Bronx. Of course empty chairs don’t make much sound.

Finally, congratulations to the Yankees on being the winningest team at Yankee Stadium, an honor previously held by the Indians
