Mailbag: Obstructed Views At Yankee Stadium and Citi Field

Some good comments have been coming in…

I got an actual email…not a posted comment,…thought it was a great point:

We know that the old stadiums had some obstructed views. But there’s something about the obstructed views at the new stadiums, particularly at yankee stadium, that just feels wrong. In the case of the yankees its 35 years later. For the mets 45 years. The overall amount of obsctructed view seats have decreased not increased. Also the obstructions in the old stadiums seemed like they were limitations of the architectutal design. The ones in the new stadiums seem diliberate.

Another thing that deosnt seem right is having the mohegan sun name, which is a casino, at yankee stadium. Should they invite pete rose and give him an honorary membership?

They can move people around all the want, but SOMEBODY is going to eventually wind up sitting in these obstructed view seats. And for a fairly high ticket price too.
and…
As a season ticket holder for many years who had great mezzanine box seats on the 3rd base line at Shea I called the Mets and was told that anything better than our seats in Promenade Section 425 (where we can’t see the left hand corner of the field) were going to cost us more money. I also found out that we are not entitled to eat in that 350 seat restaurant Drew Nierpont is running. It’s only for the ticket holders of the “better” seats. As far as I’m concerned, this whole situation stinks. Citifield is a stadium built by the rich for the rich!

Mets Lose to Padres 6-5. Time To Worry About Pitching and a Slow Start.

It’s time to start worrying about a slow start and worrying about the pitching and a team that should be better than 4 and 5.  I’ve been defending them that they’ve been hanging in games and haven’t really turned in a stinker…but they aren’t winning either.   Go look at the Bobby V teams…slow starts make for a long year, and finishing one game short is in this team’s blood.

John Maine was awful again.   6 runs in 5 innings.

Mets fans can relax on Santana day, then Pelfrey might be hurt, Ollie is crazy, Maine has nothing, and suddenly Livan is Mr. Reliable based upon the spring and one start.

Mets fans are likely to start asking about Four Inning Pedro.  Don’t.   He’s useless.  You Mets Police Newbies should read this before mentioning his name to me….although he was very nice to Dan’s mom.

Jerry Manuel continues to work K-Rod aggressively….Frankie pitched the 9th with the Mets trailing!

I noticed a fair amount of empty seats…especially late in a one run game.  Did people leave early?

Paid attendance 39,585.   You’d think they’d be sold out every night with a new park with fewer seats.  Maybe people will come out to boo Willie.

Oh well.

Lots more coming up about obstructed view seats…keep checking back!

Did The Yankees Not Want A-Rod At Yankee Stadium Opening Day?

Let me take you to the mirror universe for a second.
Derek Jeter has injured his hip and is rehabbing in Florida.   On the day the new stadium he opens, he decides to stay in Tampa to continue his workout.
Can you imagine that?
How about Don Mattingly missing the opening of the Mirror Universe New Stadium in 1994 with a bad back.
Nope I can’t imagine that either.
A-Rod is going to be on this team for nine more seasons.   Today was kind of a big day, even for the Yankees.
He couldn’t hitch a ride with George Steinbrenner and show up and wave?  There’s no place in a $1.6 billion stadium to get some rehab in?  There’s nowhere in New York City to get rehab done for a day?
Maybe the Yankees didn’t want him there.  Today is about Yogi Berra, tradition and the 26 championships.   Maybe the Yankees didn’t want the steroid cirucs.
Or is A-rod just that stupid and didn’t think to come.
Sure is odd that he wasn’t there, wasn’t it?  Nine more years Yankees fans.  Nine more years.

UPDATE:  Kay said A-Rod took batting practice in Tampa today.  I guess there was no way to do that in New York.

Unknown Mets Pitcher Appears In Yahoo Boxscore

From Rising Apple

In an interesting development, the Yahoo Sports website refused to acknowledge Mets relief pitcher Bobby Parnell’s participation in Wednesday evening’s game vs. the San Diego Padres.

Times Reporting From The New Yankee Stadium

Published: April 16, 2009
This is why those exhibition games in early April can’t replace a real grand opening. It’s an hour and a half before game time, and the new Yankee Stadium is dazzling.
Some new aesthetic touches make a big difference, especially the retired numbers displayed on a previously blank wall above the left field bleachers, and the championship seasons listed on a similar space above the bleachers in right. There’s also a flag for each major league team – including National League clubs, for the first time – ringing the top of the stadium, giving it a splash of color. There’s yellow for the Pirates, green for the A’s, purple for the Rockies. They look like candles on top of a white birthday cake.

The line to enter Monument Park snakes far behind the bleachers and up several flights of stairs. It’s like the security line at Laguardia on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, but nobody seemed to mind.

One thing you notice right away is the classic collection of photographs, several for each of the 26 title teams, drawing your eyes above the concession stands. In the very last photo we see Joe Torre, holding the 2000 trophy with the principal owner George Steinbrenner and then-Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani. (It seems like a long time since Torre managed the Yankees, doesn’t it?)
