Reports: Mets, slugger Sheffield closing in on deal
What Mets fans talk about when not talking about the actual games.
I’m thrilled that while building – what is it – $1.6 billion in stadiums that the Yankees, Mets (not to mention the football teams) had the foresight to build a retractable dome.
It’s so nice not to have to worry about rain.
It’s great to know that I’ll be nice and dry, and nice and warm.
It’s awesome to know that there is zero chance of the game being postponed, or paying $18-$25 to park and then sitting in the rain for three hours.
What’s great too is that since the dome retracts, once it gets warm and sunny we’ll be able to enjoy the Mets (Yankees) on their beautiful natural grass field bathed in beautiful sunlight.
I can’t imagine any city building a stadium (or three) without a retractable dome in the 21st Century. You’d have to be an idiot.

The Mets Police way of thinking is spreading….
Fack Youk: YMCA Is Coming To The New Stadium? Why?
This is a tradition that doesn’t need to cross the street.
I also love God, America and hope we’re all blessed, but think it’s time to stop singing a certain song that isn’t Take Me Out To The Ballgame during the 7th. Click comments to call me a communist.

I feel bad for Jim Hall, the 2008 Voice of Yankee Stadium, who is being passed over for the job as Bob Sheppard’s successor.
Some fans I know thought Hall was doing a Sheppard impression…but this article from the Times explains differently.
Mr. Hall, who has been the Yankees’ backup announcer since the mid-1960s, channels Mr. Sheppard’s elegant, careful enunciation when he is behind the microphone. “When I started,†he said on Wednesday, sounding less formal on the telephone, “Bob’s one requirement was that he didn’t want the fans to hear anything markedly different from what they were used to. People think I try to imitate Bob. There’s no way I could imitate that voice, but I do use that same style.â€
That confuses people. “They think, ‘He’s trying to mimic’ — some people in the press or on television will use that word,†Mr. Hall said. “There’s no intention on my part to do that.†Certainly not: He and Mr. Sheppard both taught public speaking, “and we believe that you should pronounce each word carefully and not rush it the way many radio people do.â€
I don’t know how old Mr. Hall is, but the same article mentions a 45 year tenure at St. John’s. That puts him at least 65 years old and probably older.
My guess is that the Yankees want a new long-term voice for the new stadium….not one who will do last a few years and then be old or retired. I think the odds of two straight PA announcers in their 90’s are unlikely. Tonight we’ll find out if Paul Olden is the man for the job.
